Going through a divorce can put a strain on you in every way possible. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as just agreeing that you both want to get divorced. Things can get even more complicated when you have children or when you share a lot of assets. Making the decision to have a divorce is a very big decision, so it is important to make sure that this divorce is the actual solution to the problem that you are having. Divorce is not temporary, so couples need to make sure that it is exactly what they want. There are a few questions that you and your spouse should both ponder when preceding through the divorce process.
The first question to ask yourself is a bit obvious: “Am I sure?” Again, this is not a temporary decision. Being divorced is a complete lifestyle change, and unless you are completely sure that this is a change that you want, it is not a good idea to continue to move forward. This can lead to the next question: “Are you and your spouse just going through a phase?” Every couple goes through rough spots, but if there is a chance that you think you may get through it and be happy again, then divorce is not the right answer for you.
It is also important to ask yourself what your life will look like after this is all over. Do you have a good support system in place? If not, do you feel capable of handling this all on your own? With this being said, divorce can still be the best option even if you feel alone. But it is always a good idea to think ahead about the help that you may need once the divorce is finalized.
No one should stay with a spouse just because he or she is not prepared for a divorce. However, it is always a good idea to look to the future. Knowing what to expect and being completely sure of your decision can reassure you that you have made the right decision and can help instill confidence.
