Meet Denise:

After twenty years as an attorney, Denise Gabel has learned that people facing divorce usually need two things from their lawyer: someone who will take their case seriously and someone who will make an unfamiliar process feel a little less overwhelming.

Denise brings both.

She is known for being approachable, practical, and exceptionally attentive to detail. Clients appreciate that she will sit down with them, listen carefully, explain what is happening in plain language, and give them a clear assessment of where they stand. She does not believe clients should feel intimidated by their own case or left wondering what comes next.

At the same time, Denise is meticulous about doing things the right way. Her approach was shaped by nearly fifteen years in public service, including fourteen years with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

Denise began her career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Phelps County, Missouri. She later joined the Attorney General’s Office, where she handled matters throughout the state and eventually served in leadership roles in both the Child Support Unit and the Government Affairs Section, including as Deputy Chief Counsel.

That experience taught her the value of preparation, credibility, and knowing the rules. Those lessons remain central to the way she practices today. Denise pays close attention to deadlines, evidence, procedure, and the small details that can become very important in a divorce or custody case.

But she also understands that a family law case is not simply a collection of pleadings, financial statements, and court dates.

It is someone’s life.

A client may be worried about where his or her children will live, whether a family home can be kept, what divorce will mean financially, or how life will look six months or two years from now. Denise understands that those concerns often matter just as much to a client as the legal issues themselves.

That perspective is one of the reasons she chose to devote her private practice exclusively to family law.

Since entering private practice in 2021, Denise has represented clients in divorce, child custody, child support, property division, spousal maintenance, and post-divorce matters. She particularly enjoys helping clients take complicated situations and turn them into a manageable plan.

Her style is straightforward but not combative for the sake of being combative. After two decades in the legal profession, Denise knows that not every disagreement needs to become a battle. She works to identify the issues that truly matter, resolve what can reasonably be resolved, and advocate firmly when an important issue requires a fight.

Denise has also served on the Supreme Court of Missouri’s Committee on Access to Family Courts since 2012. Her work with lawyers and judges on that committee has given her an even broader perspective on Missouri’s family court system and the challenges families encounter within it.

For Denise, good representation means more than knowing the law. It means being prepared, being dependable, paying attention to the details, and making sure the person sitting across the table knows that someone capable is helping carry the burden with them.
